Research contributions of the AAPD
The American Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry supports research and scholarly works in fixed prosthodontics through several programs.
- The Stanley D. Tylman Research Program supports postdoctoral student research in fixed prosthodontics through competitive grants. Tylman Awards are subsequently given for outstanding research supported by a Tylman Grant.
- The Scientific Research Committees of the AAPD contribute scholarly publications to the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

Program Description
The American Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry supports postdoctoral student research in fixed prosthodontics through the Stanley D. Tylman Research Program. Research areas significant to the clinical practice of fixed prosthodontics are supported. Tylman Awards are subsequently given for outstanding research supported by a Tylman Grant.
Amount of Grants and Use of Funds
- Multiple grants (up to $5,000 each, $20,000 in total) are funded each year.
- Grant funds may be used to fund direct costs related to small equipment, supplies, contractual costs, and other aspects of the proposed project.
- A Tylman Grant does not support indirect administrative costs, travel, or meeting expenses.
Eligibility
- Full-time students enrolled in any postdoctoral program in the United States or Canada conducting research pertinent to fixed prosthodontic may apply. At the time of application, the program director or the primary research mentor of applicant must be a member of American Academy of Fixed
Prosthodontics. - Priority for funding of grants and awards will be given to students in prosthodontic programs.
- Pre-doctoral dental students are not eligible.
- First or second year prosthodontic students may apply. Third year prosthodontic students are not eligible.
- Proposals must be endorsed by the program director of an accredited prosthodontic program.
- Grants are distributed through a competitive review process.
Deadlines
- Applications are accepted from February 1-April 1 each year
- For first year students, interim reports are due one year after the grants are awarded and final research reports are due on August 1 in the second calendar year following the awarding of funds (approximately 26 months).
- For second-year students, interim reports are due on January 1 of the following year and final research reports are due on August 1 in the first calendar year following the awarding of funds (approximately 14 months).
Responsibilities for Research Completion and Reporting
Upon completion of the research, the student must provide to the Chairman of the Tylman Research Committee:
A manuscript that is appropriate for submission to The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. The researcher should also submit his/her manuscript to The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry for review and potential publication.

Tylman Research Awards
The Tylman Committee will select up to three outstanding research reports from the manuscripts received each year to receive Tylman Research Awards. The American Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry will present cash awards to the student authors of these manuscripts. All 3 recipients of the awards are offered funding for travel and lodging for 2 nights at the meeting hotel to present the results of their studies as poster presentations. Tylman Awardees are required to be physically present at the next AAPD meeting to receive their awards and present their research at the Poster Session.
